Photography as a practice
I’m a working photographer based in Washington, DC. My portfolio can be seen here: http://www.stephenvoss.com/
Light Readings began during Covid as a way to understand that time and find connections that I was struggling to make in my photography. Now it’s a place where I grapple with the history of the medium, do deep dives into work I care about and write candidly about trying to make good work.
Before I began writing this newsletter, I sketched out some of my goals, including:
1. I’m on a journey that is fascinating and sometimes wondrous.
2. I learn things as I go, and share those things.
3. I take wrong paths sometimes and am humble and open about those failures.
4. I’m not writing an essay or book report, I’m telling a story.
5. I’m writing for my readers. I can’t expect readers to care about me if I don’t care about them.
6. Keep it light, keep it flowing
